Common Problems
Orthodontic issues are more common than many people realize. Many patients experience concerns with tooth alignment or bite that can affect oral health, comfort, and appearance. At Embrace Orthodontics, Dr. Dima Kalakech diagnoses and treats a wide range of orthodontic problems to help patients achieve healthy, balanced smiles.
Problems such as malocclusion, often called a “bad bite,” can make chewing, speaking, and maintaining oral hygiene more difficult. If left untreated, these issues may lead to tooth wear, jaw discomfort, and other complications over time.
Understanding these conditions is the first step toward choosing the right treatment.
Upper Front Teeth Protrusion
This occurs when the upper teeth extend too far forward or the lower teeth sit too far back. Protruding teeth can affect appearance and increase the risk of injury, especially in active children.
Overbite
An overbite is when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth excessively. Severe cases can cause discomfort, uneven tooth wear, and added pressure on the front teeth.
Crossbite
A crossbite happens when the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth. This can lead to uneven wear, gum issues, and improper jaw alignment if not treated early.
Openbite
An open bite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed. This can make chewing difficult and may affect speech.
Crowding
Crowding develops when there is not enough space for teeth to align properly. This can make brushing and flossing more difficult, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Spacing
Spacing refers to gaps between teeth, which may be caused by missing teeth or natural spacing. While often cosmetic, spacing can also affect function and alignment.
Underbite
An underbite occurs when the lower jaw extends forward, causing the lower teeth to sit in front of the upper teeth. This can impact chewing, speech, and jaw comfort.
What Causes Orthodontic Problems?
Orthodontic concerns can develop for a variety of reasons, including:
- Genetics and inherited jaw structure
- Early loss of baby teeth or delayed tooth eruption
- Habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting
- Injury or trauma to the teeth or jaw
- Certain medical or dental conditions
Dr. Dima Kalakech will evaluate your smile to determine the cause and recommend the most effective treatment.
