About Board Certification
Dr. Dima Kalakech (Dr. K) is a Board-Certified Orthodontist, which represents the highest level of achievement in the orthodontic profession.
While all orthodontists must be licensed to practice, only about half choose to complete board certification. This distinction reflects Dr. K’s dedication to excellence and her commitment to providing the highest level of patient care.
She has been creating beautiful, healthy smiles for patients of all ages since 2004.
Are All Orthodontists Board Certified?
No. While all orthodontists are licensed specialists, only a portion go on to complete board certification.
The certification process through the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) goes beyond the required years of advanced education. It involves:
- Demonstrating real patient results through detailed case studies
- Completing a rigorous evaluation process
- Showcasing advanced clinical skills and judgment
Board certification is voluntary and reflects a commitment to a higher standard of care.
How Many Certifying Boards Exist in Orthodontics?
There is only one recognized certifying board in orthodontics:
- The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO)
The ABO is recognized by the American Dental Association and has been setting the standard for excellence since 1929.
Its mission is to improve the quality of orthodontic care through certification, education, and professional collaboration.
Board certification demonstrates a strong commitment to:
- Delivering the highest level of patient care
- Staying current with the latest advancements in orthodontics
- Maintaining advanced clinical knowledge and skills
For many orthodontists, it represents dedication to their profession and a commitment to ongoing improvement.
What Is Involved in the Certification Process?
The ABO certification process is comprehensive and requires orthodontists to demonstrate both knowledge and clinical excellence.
The process includes:
- A detailed written examination covering all areas of orthodontics
- A clinical exam presenting real patient cases
- An oral examination with a panel of expert examiners
After successfully completing all steps, the orthodontist earns board certification.
To maintain this status, orthodontists must renew their certification every 10 years by demonstrating continued excellence in patient care.
